ERP therapy
ERP therapy for OCD — what it is, and what it's actually like
Exposure and Response Prevention (ERP) is the gold-standard treatment for OCD — and it's far gentler and more collaborative than the name suggests. Nobody is going to throw you in the deep end.
I'm Kate Kemp, RSW, and I offer ERP-based OCD therapy in Kelowna and online across British Columbia.
This might sound familiar
- You've heard ERP is effective but it sounds intimidating
- Talk therapy alone hasn't shifted your OCD
- You want a structured, evidence-based plan
- You're ready to take your time back from compulsions
Exposure
We gradually and deliberately approach the situations that trigger your obsessions — always at a level you agree to.
Response prevention
You practise resisting the compulsion that usually follows, so the brain can finally learn it isn't needed.
New learning
Over repetitions, the feared outcome doesn't come and the anxiety drops on its own. That learning is what sticks.
How I can help
We build your exposure plan together, starting with steps that feel challenging but manageable, and climbing only as you're ready. You stay in control the entire time — ERP works because of your buy-in, not in spite of it.
Between sessions you'll have small, clear practices to try, and we adjust as we go. I pair ERP with I-CBT and self-compassion work so you're addressing both the behaviour and the doubt that drives it.
Approaches I draw on
- Exposure & Response Prevention (ERP)
- Inference-based CBT (I-CBT)
- Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT)
- Self-compassion & mindfulness

Questions people ask
Is ERP therapy scary or overwhelming?+
No. ERP is gradual and fully collaborative — you set the pace and agree to each step. The goal is challenging-but-doable, never traumatic.
How long does ERP take to work?+
Many people notice change within several weeks of consistent practice, though it varies with the type and severity of OCD. We track progress together.
Can ERP be done online?+
Yes — ERP works well over secure video, and I offer it to clients throughout British Columbia.
